Day 32: Grinzing, Vienna

 Wednesday 2nd October.

Morning, it is drizzling rain. Just enough to be annoying but we are catching a tram out to Grinzing anyway.

Grinzing is an old wine area we frequently visited for its Heurigers. (Winery that serves home made food)

The area is not what it used to be, and deserted but we did find somewhere to drink.

The tram ride was good passing the area we lived in.

Rain is getting heavier so back to the city and retreat underground away from it all.

The Zwölf Apostelkeller is a historic city wine tavern in the cellar vaults of the house Sonnenfelsgasse 3 (also called "Hildebrandt-Haus" or "Elloisches Haus") in Vienna's 1st district Innere Stadt . The building and the cellars are listed buildings ( list entry ).

The lower basement was built around the year 1100. The masonry consists of Romanesque stone blocks, which were mainly used for noble buildings at that time. Some time later, the only Gothic well room that has survived today was built in. It is decorated with figures.

The house was first mentioned in a document in 1339 as the property of "Diemuth, the widow of Chunrath, the old Hansgraf". The Gothic vaulted cellar on the upper level was built before 1500. The house was destroyed in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1561. During the reconstruction, the lower cellar was given the early Baroque vaults. This date was found on the foundation stone in the lower cellar. The house was given the Baroque façade that still exists today in 1721
